Oilers A Deeper Team Than The One The Golden Knights Beat In The 2023 NHL Playoffs!
May 4, 2025
EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) – The Edmonton Oilers, not that team that Vegas had in the 2023 NHL playoffs, might very well constitute the huge difference for a repeat this time around.
The year prior, Vegas had its mind set on neutralizing the talents of the Oilers’ superstars, Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. That strategy worked, and Vegas won the series on their way to winning the Stanley Cup.
But now, the Oilers have more than just two star players. They’ve added depth across their lineup, which means they don’t have to rely only on McDavid and Draisaitl to carry the team.
“This group has improved a lot,” said Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch. “We’ve added strong players and developed our young talent. We can compete on every line now.”
Players like Ryan McLeod and Dylan Holloway are continuing to step up, while Zach Hyman, an old-school guy, keeps doing his thing, contributing. In defense, the team now finds itself better and more organized with the likes of Darnell Nurse, Mattias Ekholm, and Evan Bouchard steering the way.
Goaltending has also improved. Stuart Skinner is playing with confidence, backed by a much better defensive unit than before.
“We’re a much more complete team,” said Hyman. “Now, everyone’s contributing. That’s what makes us harder to beat.”
Connor McDavid says the team has learned from the 2023 loss and is ready to prove themselves.
“We know what happened last time,” McDavid said. “But this is a new team, and we’re ready for the challenge.”
